STCW Basic Training

USCG-Approved STCW Basic Training in Seattle

NPFVOA’s STCW Basic Training is the comprehensive 5-day, Coast Guard-approved course required for mariners seeking their first STCW endorsement on a Merchant Mariner Credential. This foundational maritime safety certification is mandatory for all crew members with safety or emergency duties on vessels of 200 gross tons or greater operating beyond U.S. territorial waters.

Held at Seattle Fishermen’s Terminal with hands-on training at partner facilities, this 40-hour course covers all four essential elements of STCW Basic Training, preparing you for safe operations aboard merchant vessels, research vessels, small passenger vessels, and more.

Who should take this course: New mariners seeking initial STCW certification, or mariners whose STCW Basic Training endorsement has expired.

USCG-approved for: 46 CFR Parts 10, 12, 15, and tables A-VI/1-1 through A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code

After completing this course, you’ll need to renew your certification every 5 years with our STCW Basic Training Refresher course. Many commercial fishing vessel crew members also benefit from our Drill Instructor Training and STCW Medical Care Provider courses.

Frequently Asked Questions About STCW Basic Training

How long is the STCW Basic Training course?

The complete STCW Basic Training course is 40 hours over 5 days.

Where is STCW Basic Training held in Seattle?

Most of the course is held at NPFVOA’s facility at Fishermen’s Terminal in Seattle. The second day of firefighting training is conducted at a local fire simulator for hands-on practice.

How long is my STCW Basic Training certification valid?

Your STCW Basic Training endorsement is valid for 5 years from your Merchant Mariner Credential issue date. You must renew it before your MMC expires. When it’s time to renew, you may qualify for either the 3-day STCW Basic Training Refresher or 2-day STCW Basic Training Revalidation course depending on your sea service, which are shorter and less expensive than taking the full 5-day course again.

How is STCW Basic Training different from the Refresher and Revalidation courses?

STCW Basic Training (5 days) is the original certification course covering all four elements required for first-time certification. The Refresher (3 days) and Revalidation (2 days) courses are shorter renewal options for mariners who already hold STCW endorsements.

If you’re getting certified for the first time or your endorsement has expired, you need the full 5-day Basic Training course.

What vessels require STCW Basic Training certification?

STCW certification requirements depend on your vessel type, size, and operating area. Generally, crew members with safety duties on larger vessels operating in international waters need STCW certification. However, specific requirements can vary based on your role and the vessel’s operations. Contact us to discuss whether your vessel requires STCW certification, or consult the USCG National Maritime Center for detailed regulatory guidance.

What's included in the course price?

The STCW Basic Training course includes all classroom instruction, hands-on training, materials, and access to our fire simulator facility.
